WITS Labs are getting ready to start up again! This is the most popular component of the WITS program and Wellness In The Schools is so excited to be putting them on!
WITS needs assistance in setting up the classroom before each class, helping the students read recipes, measuring and cutting during class, and cleaning up between classes. They could not do it without you!
WITS Chefs will be teaching WITS Carrot Lab for two weeks starting February 27th, 2018 at the Key Biscayne K-8 Center.
Thank you so much for your continued support of WITS!
If you are interested in volunteering, please see the pointers below which may assist you in deciding whether or not to sign up.
- You do not have to commit to the entire 4-day week; you may pick and choose whichever date(s) work best for you.
- Chef Laura typically teaches from 8:45 am to 12:30 pm. The school often does not have an exact schedule until days before their scheduled week, so we apologize in advance for not being more precise on each classes’ time frame.
- If you are only able to stay for a specific amount of time (e.g. 9 am to noon), please let Laura Culbreth know (her contact information is below) or add a note when signing up.
- NOTE: All volunteers must pass a background check and receive clearance from Miami-Dade County in order to volunteer for a school. Volunteers who have been previously cleared must renew their clearance each year. See the instructions below for receiving or renewing a clearance.
Instructions to register as a volunteer for Dade-County schools for the first time:
- Click on this link: http://www.engagemiamidade.net/community-school-volunteers
- Then click on “Community Members”
- When you switch to that page, you will see “Create an Account” in the bottom right corner.
- Create an account. Please note that your password can ONLY be 8 characters.
- After creating an account, you will get an e-mail confirmation. Click on the link that says “To Log In Community Portal Click Here” and complete your registration. You will be directed to a link that will give you your username (bear with the system, sometimes its takes a little long).
- Use the Log in that they give you with the password that you gave while creating your account.
- After logging in, you should be directed to your Community Portal.
- Scroll down and click on “Register to be a Volunteer”. It is right under “Give your time and talent”
- Here please fill in your information including Social Security, Birthdate, etc. Then click “Submit”
- You will then arrive to your final page! There will first be a scroll down menu where you will need to select the school that you will be volunteering at. Choose KEY BISCAYNE K-8 CENTER or CHARLES R. DREW K-8 CENTER. Then you will click “Classroom” under the first box that says Level 1 Volunteer. Click Submit!
- After clicking submit, please check back periodically for the next few days to confirm that you were cleared for the BackGround Check.
*Please write down your log in and password somewhere to help you remember them for when you next log in.
**After being cleared from the background check, you will need to bring your drivers license to the school at the time of volunteering and then you are ready to go!
How to re-register as a volunteer for Miami-Dade County:
- Go to www.dadeschools.net
- On the top of the link you will see colored tabs stating Students, Parents, Employees, Community & Bond. Please click “portal” above the word Bond.
- After clicking “portal” you should have been redirected to the Login Page.
- Here you will use the same C number that you had from last year.
- In the case that you have forgotten your portal login number (C#), please click on “Forgot Username/Password”. This should help guide you to your login information from previous year(s).
- When you successfully login, on the top left corner, please click “Apps| Services| Sites” (this is all one link).
- Then click “Be a School Volunteer”
- Read over the policies and then click, “Acknowledge and Accept”
- Then click the scroll down where it says, “Select a New Volunteer Location”.
- It will only allow you to click on one school at a time so please find the school you plan on volunteering at (either Key Biscayne K-8 or Charles Drew K-8). In the Level 1 check off box, please check off “Classroom”. Then hit “Submit.”
- After clicking “Submit” you should be able to add another school. If you plan on volunteering at another school, please reach for that school and again click, “Classroom” in the Level 1 Box.
- On the bottom of the page in the box that reads “Messages” you should see, “Your service activity selection at CHARLES R. DREW K-8 CENTER or KEY BISCAYNE K-8 CENTER requires district level approval. Allow 7 days for review.” You should see this for both schools if you selected both.
- After seeing that message, you should be set. You will receive an e-mail within 3-7 business days stating whether or not you are cleared. (If you do not receive an e-mail within that time frame, please log into your account and check status there).
Please follow the link to sign up for the date you would like to volunteer.
